What ML4Schools does with AI
ML4Schools teaches artificial intelligence and machine learning. AI is the subject students learn about, hands-on. It is not a hidden feature that acts on them.
How the AI works
- Machine learning runs in the student's browser. Our ML lab activities use TensorFlow.js, which trains and runs models on the student's own device. The data students experiment with is not sent to our servers for training, and we don't build models from student data.
- No automated decisions about students. We do not use AI to make or recommend decisions that affect a student (such as grading that isn't reviewable, or profiling). Teachers remain in control of assessment.
- No student data sold or used to train commercial models. Consistent with the Australian Government's position that schools should not use AI products that sell student data: we don't, and we won't.
Alignment with the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools
| Principle | How we meet it |
|---|---|
| Teaching & learning | AI literacy is our core purpose |
| Human & social wellbeing | Activities are age-appropriate and designed for students' best interests |
| Transparency | This statement, our Privacy Policy, and our Security & Trust page explain exactly what happens |
| Fairness | We design for inclusion and avoid collecting data that enables unfair profiling |
| Accountability | Our Privacy Officer is Nicholas Schlederer; teachers retain control; Privacy Impact Assessments for new AI features |
| Privacy, security & safety | Data minimisation, primarily Australian hosting (see our Security & Trust page), no advertising, no data sale |
If we add new AI features
Any future feature that processes student information server-side (for example, an AI tutor or feedback tool) will be:
- assessed with a Privacy Impact Assessment before release;
- described plainly in our Privacy Policy and this statement before students use it;
- built so teachers stay in control and outputs are reviewable; and
- covered by our data-minimisation and no-data-sale commitments.
We will re-assess against the ST4S AI module and the Children's Online Privacy Code as those apply.
